Partnering with fisherman to protect our local fish populations

We’re back from summer break! For our September First Saturday Speaker Series, we have Dr. Scott Hamilton joining us from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories!
Scott will describe what we’ve learned from the effects of marine protection on fish populations using one of the state’s long-term monitoring programs. The California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program (CCFRP) is a community-based science program that works with recreational fishermen to evaluate the performance of marine protected areas and how this information can be used for sustainable management of nearshore fisheries.
Dr. Scott Hamilton has been a Professor at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories for 14 years and he leads the Ichthyology (fish biology) lab. He received his PhD from UC Santa Barbara and undergraduate degree from Princeton University. His lab studies the ecology of kelp forest and coral reef systems, how human impacts (climate change, overfishing) have stressed those systems, and potential solutions to rebuild or maintain healthy marine ecosystems
