Recent and Ongoing Projects

The Friends of the Carmel Valley Library is the “helping hand” that supports the library in providing resources and sponsoring programs above and beyond the library’s annual budget from Monterey County. Some projects and programs are ongoing, while others are one-time needs. All contributions to the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library allow projects such as these to continue in the years ahead, which enhances the library experience for all of us. Thank you for your ongoing support! Over the past several years, Friends of the Carmel Valley Library has given time and money to support the following projects:

First Saturday Series

FirstsaturdayThis popular series spotlighting local authors was started by the Friends in 2000. Some sessions have attracted up to 60 attendees, and refreshments for the group are provided by the Friends.

Extra Staff Hours

Basic library staffing is paid for by the Monterey County Free Library system, but the Friends supplement the county budget by covering the cost of a Library Assistant I in the Carmel Valley branch for four hours per week. This greatly increases the library’s ability to create and maintain outreach education, youth programming, and class visits to local schools. Having additional hours also gives the staff increased capacity and flexibility to participate with customers in the library and in the community.

Annual Book Purchases

StacksEvery year the Friends fund the purchase of several hundred books for circulation, at a cost of roughly $9,000 annually. These purchases are over and above the County’s allocated budget, and are typically for items of local interest or items that have been specifically requested by Buckeye patrons. The Friends also pay for multiple magazine and newspaper subscriptions on an annual basis.

Supplies and Materials for Children’s Programs

KidsmaterialsThe Friends support the Carmel Valley library’s homework center for students, fund programs for summer reading enrichment, and provide craft materials or games for ongoing children’s programming. Each summer the library creates interactive and entertaining programs to encourage children to read, such as creating costumes of favorite literary characters, a kids’ concert by local musician Kiki Wow, or a “Reader’s Theater” presentation of The Lorax. The long painted silk scarf that hangs in the children’s area is from one of the annual silk painting workshops funded by the Friends.

Part of the operating cost was creating customized blackout curtains for the entire room; which were crafted by local residents Jim McNeely and Mark Gibbs of Monterey Bay Canvas.

Rent for Second Floor

The 300-square-foot space above the Buckeye building has had various commercial uses over the years, but when the space became available for library use, the Friends established a rent agreement to claim it. The upstairs floor provides much-needed storage for tables, chairs, seasonal decorations, and other library equipment.

Woodworking and Interior Projects

WoodworkingProjects by local craftsmen throughout the library building were sponsored by the Friends. Larry Busick has done an extensive amount of woodwork, such as the bench in the children’s area, cabinets around the checkout area, glass display cases and slat walls at the main entrance, and slat wall endcaps on shelving in the upper library floor. Conrad Cayce created the large felt board that covers the old fireplace in the children’s area, and Bob Hursey did extensive drawing and design for interior remodeling projects.

Firewood Racks and Fireplace Screen

FireplaceFirewood racks for the outside patio were purchased in 2010, and hold a full cord of wood. They have a cover to protect the wood from moisture, and they keep the wood off the ground to discourage critters from taking up residence. Local scout troops often provide wood for the racks, which is burned on the indoor fireplace throughout the cool winter months. The fireplace creates wonderful ambience, and is many patrons’ favorite aspect of visiting the Buckeye.
