Friends of the Carmel Valley Library is a non-profit 501c(3) California corporation established in 1980 by a group of patron supporters who shared an interest in books of all kinds. Since then the mission of the Friends has been to enhance whatever we can at the library in the way of furniture, programs, supplemental staffing and the collection. Our enhancements have grown more meaningful as budget cuts curtail County Library funds. Our goal is to make the most of what we have to keep the library attractive and comfortable for patrons of all ages. Our building is an early adobe-an-redwood former residence that became a restaurant before it became a Monterey County Free Libraries branch library in 1980. The place’s charm and refreshing intimacy invite patrons to feel a sense of ownership in the life of the library by becoming members of the Friends. Anyone who send in membership dues or a donation automatically becomes a Friend of the Carmel Valley Library.

What do the Friends do?

Friends’ membership dues, donations and participation in fundraisers – notably our wine appreciation and auction event in November – allow our board of directors to work with the librarian and County offices to pursue the following enhancements:

  • Increase the collection of books, audiobook CDs and DVDs
  • Buy furniture and certain equipment
  • Fund remodeling improvements
  • Support rent of additional space
  • Buy materials for youth activities like the Summer Reading Program
  • Support guest presenters for children’s programs though-out the year
  • Support supplemental staff hours
  • Invite local speakers to present topics of interest at our First Saturday Series
  • Represent and promote the library at local community service group functions
  • Buy firewood for our cozy fireplace
  • Reimburse the C.V. Garden Club for new plants and materials for the patio garden

The board of directors meets at the library from 5:30pm to 6:30pm on the first Wednesday of each month, and all members are invited to attend the meetings. The annual meeting is help at the library on the first Saturday in November to elect directors for the coming year and to review the year’s accomplishments. Anyone who is interested in participating in Friends activities is cordially invited to leave his or her name at the library desk so that we may follow up with a warm welcome.
