SUMMARY:Sculptures from sand\, snow\, steel and more!
DESCRIPTION:For our First Saturday Series in October\, we will take a peek at some amazing sculptures as we go on a journey around the world. You’ll hear the story of how a kid from Iowa became a world renowned sand sculptor & ended up with his own show on the Travel channel.\nRusty Croft is currently featured in the Carmel Magazine and is the owner of Sand Guys. \nIn Rusty’s own words: \nI initially came to our area for love! Love for a woman came first\, then love for the central coast came next. My wife\, Natalie Taggart\, is my biggest inspiration. She is one of the most creative and talented people I’ve ever met\, and our three girls are always engaging in some sort of creative pursuit. \nAll four of them dance\, sing photograph\, paint sculpt\, and write. Creativity is not a job so much as a way of life for us. My work is also highly influenced by the flora and fauna of Carmel Valley and Carmel by the Sea. My latest series of equestrian sculptures is derived from the daily inspirations of driving by multiple horse arenas in Carmel Valley. The epic landscapes that surround us are also an endless source of inspiration.

SUMMARY:Partnering with fisherman to protect our local fish populations
DESCRIPTION:We’re back from summer break! For our September First Saturday Speaker Series\, we have Dr. Scott Hamilton joining us from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories! \nScott will describe what we’ve learned from the effects of marine protection on fish populations using one of the state’s long-term monitoring programs. The California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program (CCFRP) is a community-based science program that works with recreational fishermen to evaluate the performance of marine protected areas and how this information can be used for sustainable management of nearshore fisheries. \nDr. Scott Hamilton has been a Professor at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories for 14 years and he leads the Ichthyology (fish biology) lab. He received his PhD from UC Santa Barbara and undergraduate degree from Princeton University. His lab studies the ecology of kelp forest and coral reef systems\, how human impacts (climate change\, overfishing) have stressed those systems\, and potential solutions to rebuild or maintain healthy marine ecosystems
